Part 3: Red Hat Storage Server Delivers on the Promise
By Steve Bohac, Red Hat Storage Product Marketing
Several weeks ago, we posted the blog “Open Software Defined Storage – Don’t Get Fooled By The False ‘Open’ and Get Locked-In Again”. Coincident with that blog, the IT analyst firm Gartner placed ‘Software Defined Anything’ in its list for Top IT Trends for 2014. With this proclamation, as well as recent discussions in the storage market about software-defined storage, we wanted to spend some time to discuss the graphic shown in our original blog and what Red Hat’s approach is to this important and growing market trend and why we believe that a truly open approach will ultimately win the day.
Today’s entry is the third in our four part mini-series.
In the last entry in this discussion, we focused on Red Hat's support and sponsorship of the Gluster community and how that powers the strong innovation that community is delivering. Well, it is through that community powered innovation and truly open, software-defined storage that Red Hat Storage Server is able to deliver extensibility and flexibility to the enterprise (the two themes highlighted in the portion of that graphic below).
Red Hat Storage offers the option to deploy on physical servers, as a virtual server instance or in the cloud. Businesses can take advantage of public clouds such as Amazon Web Service (AWS) by running a Red Hat Storage Server instance in the cloud. Also worth noting is that they can run existing apps here in the cloud without rewriting them. In fact, with Red Hat, an organization can deploy the same storage in any cloud environment, be it private, public or hybrid with OpenStack.
Additionally, Red Hat Storage Server can be personalized for the deployment of various storage functions on your schedule, to meet the requirements of your business. And by leveraging industry-standard x86 server hardware, Red Hat Storage Server supports approximately 100 different hardware platforms. Chances are good that we support yours, too.
