Gluster’s software-only commercial solutions give enterprises the ability to treat physical storage as a virtualized, standardized, and scale-on-demand pool in the same way they treat computing resources today, radically improving storage economics in the process. Gluster’s unique architecture enables enterprises to scale on demand to petabytes of capacity and GB/s of throughput, with n-way replication. Since the solution is built in building block fashion using the customer’s choice of commodity hardware, economics are exceptional; for most use cases, Gluster plus commodity hardware delivers greater performance and availability at ½ to 1/3 the cost of comparable proprietary, monolithic solutions.
At the core of Gluster technology for private cloud storage is GlusterFS, a POSIX compliant, distributed file system built for high availability, high performance, scale-out architectures. Gluster is deployable in private clouds in two basic configurations:
- As a virtual machine on popular hypervisors such as KVM, VMware, and Xen.
- As a self contained software appliance on bare metal servers which are certified on the Red Hat Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).
Gluster is rapidly becoming the standard for high availability and performance in the private cloud.
