Gluster to Share Best Practices of Cloud Storage at Bio-IT World

Cloud storage provider will showcase latest technology and educate bioinformatics companies on how to best manage research data in the cloud; industry cloud predictions for the next year

MILPITAS, Calif. – April 11, 2011 – Gluster, the leading provider of scale-out, open source storage solutions for public and private clouds, today announced its co-founder and chief technology officer, Anand Babu (AB) Periasamy, will be among the industry experts presenting in the cloud computing track during Bio-IT World. The event will take place April 12–14 at the World Trade Center in Boston. On Thursday, April 14 from 12:15 p.m. to 12:30 p.m., Periasamy will present “Scale-Out Storage for High Performance Bioinformatics in the Cloud.” Additionally, Gluster will be exhibiting in booth 429 with its newest partner, RightScale, and will be demonstrating its recently released Gluster Virtual Storage Appliances, the first scale-out NAS virtual appliances for VMware, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and RightScale environments.

During his session, Periasamy will discuss how Gluster and RightScale Cloud Management enable bioinformatics companies to focus on research—rather than IT—by leveraging the automation and massive scalability capabilities of the Amazon cloud. He will share best practices, recommendations and use cases on managing research data in the cloud.

Periasamy also will expand on his three major predictions for how cloud computing will affect the bioinformatics industry within the next year:

  1. As bioinformatics enterprises move into the cloud, cloud compute and cloud storage will solve the big data problem researchers have been struggling with for years.
  2. Leveraging cloud technology will greatly accelerate research results and will enable new drug discoveries and high-quality, targeted medical treatments.
  3. Cloud computing will decrease the total cost of medical, from research to patient treatment, and reduce time to treatment in both developed and undeveloped nations.

Prior to Gluster, Periasamy served as CTO at California Digital Corporation and, in 2004, led the development of the world’s second-fastest supercomputer, “Thunder,” for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Periasamy also serves on the board of “Free Software Foundation – India.”
