Today's Post: Red Hat Storage Server In Action

By Steve Bohac, Red Hat Storage Product Marketing

Several weeks ago, we posted the blog “Open Software Defined Storage – Don’t Get Fooled By The False ‘Open’ and Get Locked-In Again”. Today’s entry is the conclusion of this four part mini-series.

We understand how difficult it is to optimize your storage for innovation and growth, and our goal is to help enterprises on their journey to convert their data centers from cost centers into revenue-generators. Red Hat Storage Server has helped businesses of all varieties achieve their objectives. Here’s how open, software-defined storage has helped a few organizations get to the next level:

Cornell University was able to innovate faster than ever by laying new technology on their existing infrastructure, a mix of native OS and Windows on 158 terabytes using hardware from Dell.

This permitted the kind of affordable scalability needed by the Cornell Institute for Biotechnology and Life Science Technologies. The scale-out design of Red Hat Storage built on the high-performance SAN that Cornell already had in place helped the university save money and avoid the future cost of deploying additional servers and storage hardware.

Intelitek reached a new level of agility with Red Hat Storage Server. Red Hat Storage can scale linearly and easily for the maintenance of business continuity. Intelitek deployed Red Hat Storage on Amazon Web Services using Apache servers, Amazon EC2 instances, and Amazon Elastic Block Storage (EBS) to achieve a highly available and scalable NAS storage technology. Oh, and how many applications did they have to re-write? That’s correct: zero.

Intuit helps American taxpayers save money, and Red Hat helps Intuit do the same. By deploying Red Hat Storage on standard server and storage hardware, Intuit reduced the cost per terabyte of storage by a factor of sixteen.  In fact, we were so impressed by their set-up and results that we named Intuit as the 2013 Red Hat Innovation Award Winner for Best Storage Innovation. Learn more about the honor in our blog article here.
